In His Footsteps - Dome of the Rock Jerusalem

The Garden Tomb

Located outside the walls of the Old City of Jerusalem, adjacent to the Damascus Gate, the Garden Tomb is the burial ground on which Jesus' tomb lies.

A visit to the Garden Tomb is central to any Holy Land tour. The site's pastoral tranquility and nature-like setting allow those on a tour to the Holy Land to worship and reflect in peace in the land.

The Garden Tomb - History

The Garden Tomb was discovered in the 1880s by Major General Charles George Gordon, a British army officer sent to Palestine as part of the army's law enforcement brigades in the colony. General Gordon identified the Garden Tomb to be Jesus' final resting place and the site of his resurrection.

The Calvary is the historic spot of Jesus' Crucifixion. It is situated only a short distance away from the Garden Tomb.

The Garden Tomb is described in the Gospel of John as Jesus' burial site.

The Garden Tomb - The Hill of the Skull

General Gordon's finding that the Crucifixion took place at the Calvary (only a short distance from the Garden Tomb) is grounded in the scriptures.

It is written, both in the Bible and in the Gospel of John, that Jesus was crucified "at the place of the skull". Interestingly, the site of the Garden Tomb is neighbored by a rocky hillside which, when observed closely, curiously resembles a skull.

Nowhere in the holy texts is it mentioned that the "place of the skull" was a hill, but the slope's uncanny resemblance to a skull - its distinctive eye sockets and bridge of the nose - make this the unmistakable site.
